I am using my old data plan. I didn't need to change it. I believe you need to have the simply Everything plan or a Everything Data plan. The prices may vary depending on where you live.
I'm biased because I've been with Palm for the past 3 phones (Treo 650 and Centro). I have only had the phone since Thursday so I can't do a full report on it yet. So far I like it. I like the gestured needed to do everything. If you want to get back to the main screen you can swipe the back gesture until you are there. Almost like an undo button. Or press the middle button, switch to another app while the 1st one is still open or swipe the app off the screen to close it. So far some of things I do not like is the fact that you can not select multiple photos at once. The same happens when I am trying to upload an attachment to an email. Iit doesn't have video. the Treo and Centro had video. The fun alternative it to take many photos via pressing the space bar. the camera will take a new photo about one per second. then you can create stop motions movies :-) I've created four already, but nothing special. What phone do you have now?
Thanks for the review. I've heard a lot of good things about the Pre. I'm actually between phones. I have a photo of my old one in this post. I've never had a smartphone and I'm somewhat ambivalent about iPhones that require a new two-year agreement with AT&T (I've had them before and in my area I couldn't walk under a tree without my call getting dropped). I'm hoping to get a universal phone so I can switch if I need to without having to buy yet another phone. My current wireless phone company is charging me the regular monthly fee for the second month in a row as if I already had a new phone. They claim they can't adjust the amount once the bill goes out, and that I have to pay the overcharged amt. before they can "credit" me in the next bill. It's really shady of them and I'd leave them in a minute if I could find a better deal.
Aw man sorry to hear about your purse getting stolen :-(. I had that happen to me at a party years ago and my car keys were in the bag. I had to get a ride home, wake my mom, get a ride back to Manhattan and then drive home. All of this at like 5 AM. Then spent the next hour and half canceling credit cards.
I have been with the same provider for 10 years (Sprint) and I have not had any problems so I never needed to switch. I've also have had a smart phone for the last 3 phones (including the Pre), mostly because of my job. So I'm not sure what good cheaper phones are out there (answering your blog post).
Maybe you can wait for Christmas and get the Palm Pixi: http://palm.com/pixi . It is supposed to be a little cheaper than the Pre and probably better based on everyone's critics of the Pre. I think i read on one of your post that you want to get more serious with your blogging. A smart phone can help. Most of them have word processing applications or you can compose emails and save them for later or just email them straight to your blog. Or send photos straight to flickr. Or write songs, I just saw you are a musician, cool :-)
You do make a good argument for getting a smart phone. The mo-blogging option would open up a whole new world. I looked at the Pixi and it looks nice. I like that it has a raised keypad and that it's not completely touch-screen. I could wait for this if I decide to sign another contract (that I'm not tied to one now is keeping me from switching to any other of the major carriers requiring one). Thanks for the suggestion.
[this is good] I'm all about iPhone alternatives. How is it aside from the non-Voxability? Is the data plan reasonably-priced??

That sucks that it happened to you, too.
